Which style is best for you?

Symmetrical Canoes

Asymmetrical Canoes

Asymmetrical canoes have their widest point aft of center providng a longer, narrower bow and a shorter, more blunted stern. This leads to easier and faster acceleration, greater glide and tracking ability, and comparable stability depending on load. This type of canoe tens to reach it's load limit quickly and is more prone to the adverse effects created by weight.

Canoe Sides

Canoe Sides

Flared sides keep water from rolling into the canoe as it travels through the waves.

Tumblehome sides curve back inward before reaching the gunwale, allowing paddlers better access to the water as the paddle can be positioned parallel to the keel line for an efficient paddle stroke.

Design

Length and width are the key factors affecting canoe performance. Length governs potential speed while width determines stability. The wider the hull, the more stability at the expense of speed. These factors along with depth determine maximum load and wave action the hull can successfully deflect.
